Mason's Inlet

Mason’s Inlet is a surf spot in southern North Carolina on the Southeast U.S. coast, near the Wrightsville Beach / Figure Eight Island area. It’s a dynamic inlet break, meaning the sandbars and channels can shift often, so the wave quality changes with tides, swell direction, and recent storms.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Sandbar and inlet peaks, sometimes with hollow sections when conditions line up
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers, especially those comfortable with changing currents and shifting takeoff zones
• Crowd: Can be relatively quiet compared with more famous beach breaks, but local knowledge matters
• Hazards: Strong currents, moving sandbars, and shoaling, especially near the inlet channel

Conditions

• Works best on clean swell with favorable wind, often after storms or during periods when the inlet has formed good sandbars
• Tide sensitivity: Can vary a lot; some setups are better on mid to outgoing tide, but this depends on the current sand configuration
• Because it’s an inlet, conditions can be powerful and inconsistent, but occasionally produce very good waves
