Holden Beach

Holden Beach is a barrier island beach break on the southern coast of North Carolina, known for its mellow, user-friendly waves and laid-back small-town atmosphere. The beach is typically best with fall and winter swells, especially when there’s a clean northeast swell combined with favorable winds. In summer, surf is often smaller and softer, making it more suitable for longboarding, beginners, and cruisy sessions.

The break is generally a sandy beach break with shifting sandbars, so conditions can change frequently depending on tides and storm activity. Waves are usually best around mid tide, though certain sand setups can work at other stages of the tide. Because it’s an open Atlantic-facing stretch, it can pick up plenty of swell, but it also tends to be more exposed to wind, so light offshore or calm winds make a big difference.

Crowds are usually lighter than at more famous East Coast surf destinations, and the vibe is relaxed. It’s a good spot for surfers looking for a quieter session and forgiving waves, though strong currents and occasional shorebreak can appear when surf gets bigger.
