Bald Head Island- Point

Bald Head Island – Point is a well-known surf spot in southeastern North Carolina, on the southern end of Bald Head Island near the mouth of the Cape Fear River. It’s a classic Outer Banks / Carolina coast-style break with shifting sandbars, exposed beach conditions, and a fairly raw, natural setting.

What it’s like

• Type of break: Mostly a beach break with sandbars; conditions can change often.
• Wave shape: Can offer peaky, punchy waves when the sandbars line up, but it’s highly tide- and swell-dependent.
• Best conditions: Typically works best with a groundswell or solid southeast/east swell and light offshore winds.
• Tide: Often better on mid tide to incoming tide, though this can vary with sand movement.
• Crowds: Usually less crowded than more accessible mainland spots, but access can be a factor.

Vibe and setting

• Remote and scenic, with natural shoreline, dunes, and strong coastal currents.
• Because it’s at the point near the inlet, the area can have powerful currents, shifting channels, and sand movement.
• The setting feels more wild and exposed than a typical urban surf beach.

Skill level

• Intermediate to advanced surfers will generally get the most out of it, especially when the surf is bigger or the currents are strong.
• Beginners should be cautious, as conditions can get fast, messy, and hazardous, especially near the point and inlet influence.
