Park Point

Park Point is a Great Lakes surf spot on the southern side of Duluth, Minnesota, along the long sandy barrier spit that separates Superior Bay from Lake Superior. It’s one of the better-known surfable stretches in the North East Great Lakes region, with a beachbreak character that can turn on when the right Lake Superior storm systems line up.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly beach break
• Best swell direction: Typically works best on N/NE/ENE Lake Superior swells
• Wind: Usually wants offshore to light cross-offshore winds; strong onshore winds can make it messy fast
• Bottom: Mostly sand, so conditions can change with sand movement and storms
• Crowd: Can be popular when it’s good, but Great Lakes surf is generally more low-key than ocean spots

• Best season: Fall through early winter is often prime, when Lake Superior produces bigger storm-driven swells
• Water temps: Very cold for much of the year; thick wetsuits, boots, gloves, and hood are often necessary
• Consistency: Not a daily wave spot—it's highly weather-dependent, with action often tied to passing low-pressure systems
