Elbow Ledge is a well-known reef/ledge break in Southern New England on the U.S. Northeast coast. It’s the kind of spot that can produce powerful, hollow waves when conditions line up, but it’s also advanced and potentially hazardous because of the shallow bottom and strong local currents.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Reef/ledge break
• Break direction: Typically can work on multiple angles depending on swell and tide
• Best size: Often comes alive with solid swell; smaller days may be less consistent or less surfable
• Wave quality: Can be fast, hollow, and heavy
• Crowd: Can draw experienced locals when it’s on

Conditions

• Swell: Prefers groundswell with enough energy to wrap into the ledge
• Wind: Usually best with clean offshore or light variable winds
• Tide: Tide sensitivity is important; the right tide can make a big difference in shape and safety
• Season: Fall and winter are generally the most promising times in Southern New England for strong surf
