1st Beach — also called First Beach or Easton’s Beach — is in Newport, Rhode Island on the southern New England / Northeast U.S. coast. It’s a popular beachbreak with a fairly exposed Atlantic setup, so it can pick up plenty of swell, especially from late fall through spring. It’s known as a beginner-friendly to intermediate surf spot when the sand and swell line up, though conditions can change quickly with tide, wind, and shifting sandbars.

What it’s like

1st Beach is a convenient and accessible surf break with mellow, rideable waves when the conditions are right. Because it’s a beachbreak, the peaks can be spread out and inconsistent, but that also means there are often opportunities for both learners and more experienced surfers. On bigger swells it can become fast and powerful, and the currents can be noticeable.

Local note

Since it’s in southern New England, the water is typically cold for much of the year, so a wetsuit is usually necessary outside summer.
