Cupsogue Beach is a surf spot on the far east end of Long Island, New York, on the Atlantic-facing South Shore. It’s part of Smith Point County Park / Cupsogue Beach County Park area in the Fire Island region, and it’s known for being one of the better accessible beachbreaks on Long Island when conditions line up.

Surf characteristics

  • Type: Sandy beachbreak
  • Wave shape: Generally fun, punchy, and hollow when sand bars are set up well
  • Best swell direction: Often works best with E to SE swell
  • Best wind: NW, WNW, or W winds are usually cleaner
  • Tide: Can work at different tides depending on sandbars, but many surfers like it around mid tide
  • Wave size: Can range from small, user-friendly summer surf to solid overhead winter swells

What it’s like to surf there

Cupsogue is known for: - Fast-moving peaks that can offer short but quality rides - A mix of lefts and rights breaking off shifting sandbars - Being more wave-dependent than point-like spots, so conditions can change quickly - Crowds during good swell, especially on weekends and in warmer months

Conditions and season

  • Best season: Fall and winter are often the most reliable for quality surf due to Atlantic storm swells and offshore winds
  • Summer: Smaller, softer waves, but can still be fun with the right tropical swell
  • Hurricane season: Can produce very good surf when a clean swell arrives

Hazards / considerations

  • Shifting sandbars can make waves inconsistent
  • Strong rips are common, especially on bigger days
  • Beach access and parking rules can vary by season and park regulations
  • It can get cold and windy in the off-season, so proper gear is important

Overall vibe

Cupsogue is a classic Long Island beachbreak: capable of producing excellent surf, especially after storms, but highly dependent on sand, swell, and wind. When it’s on, it can be one of the more fun and punchy waves on the island.
