Nānākuli Black Rocks is a reef/rock break on the west side of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi, in the Nānākuli area. It’s a fairly exposed, raw-feeling spot with waves that break over reef and lava rock, so it’s best suited to experienced surfers who are comfortable reading shallow water and localized takeoff zones.

What it’s like

Wave type: Reef break, with powerful waves that can be fast and hollow when conditions line up.
Bottom: Shallow reef/rock, so wipeouts can be hazardous.
Conditions: Can handle size, especially during west to northwest swells and sometimes south swells depending on angle.
Crowds: Usually less crowded than more famous Oʻahu spots, but local awareness and respect are important.
