Makapuu Beach

Makapuʻu Beach, on Oʻahu’s southeastern shore in Hawaiʻi, is a scenic and powerful surf spot known for its exposed, open-ocean conditions and dramatic backdrop beneath the Makapuʻu Lighthouse cliffs.

Surf character

• Wave type: Mostly a beachbreak with strong shorebreak and occasional reef influence depending on the exact zone.
• Power: Often powerful and fast, with steep takeoffs.
• Consistency: Can get very good with the right swell, especially during winter surf.
• Skill level: Best suited for experienced surfers; the surf can be heavy, shallow, and unforgiving.

Best conditions

• Swell direction: Works well with south to southeast swells, and can also pick up winter north swell energy depending on size and angle.
• Wind: Light offshore or calm conditions are ideal; trade winds can make it bumpy.
• Tide: Mid tide is often safer and more manageable than very low tide, which can expose shallow sections.

Hazards

• Strong currents and shorebreak: The area can be turbulent, with powerful backwash and rip currents.
• Shallow sand/reef: Depending on sand movement and swell, shallow bottoms can make wipeouts dangerous.
• Heavy surf zone: Waves can break hard very close to shore.
• Limited margin for error: This is not a beginner-friendly beach when surf is up.

Vibe and setting

Makapuʻu is one of Oʻahu’s most beautiful coastlines, with turquoise water, rugged cliffs, and views toward the offshore islets of Manana and Kaohikaipu. It’s a popular place for scenic drives, bodyboarding, and watching waves crash against the coast.
