Because it breaks over a shallow reef, wipeouts can be severe, and the wave demands a high level of skill and experience.

Conditions

Backdoor works best when: - Large north or northwest swells are hitting the North Shore - Light offshore winds from the southeast are blowing - Tide is mid to low, though the ideal tide varies with swell size

Hazards
