Kahului Harbor

Kahului Harbor on Maui isn’t a classic postcard surf break, but it can produce rideable waves when swell and wind line up. It’s an exposed harbor area on the north shore of Kahului, so conditions are often impacted by boat traffic, wind chop, and the harbor layout.

Surf character

• Wave type: Mostly wind-driven, inconsistent, and often choppy; can occasionally hold fun short-period swell.
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers who don’t mind imperfect, industrial harbor conditions.
• Not ideal for: Beginners looking for clean, forgiving waves or a mellow beachbreak environment.

Conditions

• Wind: Trades commonly affect quality, often making it bumpy.
• Swell: Works best with northwest or north swells, but the harbor orientation and nearby structures can distort wave shape.
• Consistency: Unreliable compared with Maui’s better-known reef and beach breaks.

Hazards

• Boat and harbor traffic
• Strong currents and changing water movement
• Shallow or unpredictable bottom in areas near structures
• Water quality can be a concern near industrial/port areas

Vibe

• More of a utility/working-harbor surf area than a scenic destination break.
• Crowds are usually lighter than famous Maui spots, but that’s partly because the wave quality is often secondary to the harbor setting.
