Grandma's

Grandma’s is a well-known surf break on Maui’s north shore in Hawaiʻi, near the town of Kahului/Wailuku side of the island’s windward coast. It’s a spot that often comes alive when North Pacific swells wrap into the island, especially in the cooler months.

• Type: Reefs/points-style break with a localized takeoff zone
• Wave quality: Can produce fast, powerful, hollow sections when the swell is right
• Best conditions: Northerly to northwesterly swells with favorable wind and tide
• Wind: Offshore or light trade winds are preferred; strong winds can make it messy

What it’s like

Grandma’s is known as a serious, high-energy wave rather than a mellow beginner spot. On the right day it can offer clean walls and barrels, but it can also be heavy and demanding, with shallow sections and a lot of power. Conditions can change quickly, so local knowledge matters a lot.
