Churches

Churches is one of Maui’s more famous heavy-wave surf spots, located on the north shore of Maui, Hawaii near Kāʻanapali/Wailuku side depending on swell direction access, and known for delivering powerful ocean conditions when the North Pacific wakes up.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Fast, powerful reef break
• Best for: Experienced surfers only
• Conditions: Can get very large and hollow, especially in winter swells
• Hazards: Shallow reef, strong currents, and heavy shorebreak

Best swell and wind

• Swell direction: Usually works best with north to northwest swells
• Wind: Light offshore or clean trades are ideal
• Season: Winter is the prime season, though it can break other times if the swell is right

Surfing character

Churches is often described as a high-performance big-wave reef break with sections that can hold serious size. When it’s on, it can produce long, fast walls and hollow sections, but it requires precise positioning and confidence in bigger surf.
