Tunnels

Tunnels (also known as Makua Beach / Makua) is one of Kauai’s most famous surf breaks, located on the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii. It’s known for its scenic beauty, powerful waves, and dramatic backdrop of the Na Pali Coast and coral reefs.

What it’s like

Tunnels can produce fast, hollow, and powerful lefts and rights, depending on the swell direction and reef setup. On smaller days, it can still offer fun, more manageable waves, but when a strong swell hits, it becomes a serious, heavy wave with long hold-downs and strong currents.

The spot is also famous for its underwater lava tubes and coral formations, which helped give it the name “Tunnels.” It’s beautiful but can be unforgiving, so local knowledge and caution are important.
