Pakala

Pakala is a powerful, local reef break on the west side of Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi, near Port Allen. It’s known for its fast, heavy waves and is generally considered a wave for experienced surfers only.

What it’s like

Pakala can produce long, forceful lefts and rights depending on the swell direction, with a punchy takeoff and sections that can get very critical over the reef. On good swells it can offer a highly rewarding ride, but it’s not forgiving—wipeouts can be rough due to the shallow bottom and energy of the wave.

Conditions

• Best wind: Light offshore winds, typically from the east or northeast
• Best tide: Often works best at mid to lower tide, though it depends on swell size
• Swell direction: Most consistent with west/southwest winter swells

• This spot is not beginner-friendly
• Local surf etiquette matters a lot here
• Conditions can change quickly, so checking a surf report before heading out is a good idea
