Tombstones

Tombstones is a powerful, reef-based surf break on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi (Hawaiʻi Island), known for its heavy, hollow waves and sharp lava-rock reef. It’s one of those spots that can produce memorable surf, but it’s also high-consequence and best left to experienced surfers only.

What it’s like

• Best for: Experienced to expert surfers
• Conditions: Can get very hollow and powerful, especially on solid swells
• Hazards: Shallow reef, sharp lava rock, strong currents, and potentially dangerous wipeouts

Surf character

Tombstones tends to break with a lot of speed and force, often offering a barreling section when the swell, tide, and wind line up. It’s not typically a beginner-friendly wave because mistakes can mean hard contact with reef.

Environment

The spot is set in a rugged volcanic coastline environment, with a dramatic, exposed feel. The surrounding area is scenic but can be unforgiving, especially when the ocean gets big.
