Richardsons Beach Park (often just “Richardsons”) is a well-known surf and bodyboard spot on the Big Island of Hawaii, near Hilo on the east side of Hawaii Island.

Quick description

Wave type: Mostly a reef break with waves that can be fun and relatively sheltered compared with more exposed spots on the island.
Best for: Beginners to intermediate surfers, bodyboarders, and swimmers on smaller days; conditions can be more challenging when swells are up.
Swell direction: Works best with south swells and, depending on conditions, can also pick up east trade-wind swell.
Wind: Often prefers light winds or offshore/side-offshore conditions; strong trades can make it messy.
Water conditions: Usually clear and tropical, with a mix of surf and protected swimming areas nearby.
Hazards: Sharp reef, occasional strong currents, shallow sections, and crowded conditions when it’s good.
