Pohoiki

Pohoiki is a surf spot on Hawaii Island’s east side, in the Puna district. It sits near the tiny coastal community of Isaac Hale / Pohoiki and is known for its raw, volcanic setting and powerful Pacific swell.

Surf character

• Type: Reef/point-style surf over volcanic rock and reef
• Wave quality: Can be very good when conditions line up, with fun, shaped waves and long rides at the right tide and swell angle
• Power: Often punchy and reef-driven, with plenty of energy
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers, depending on size and conditions

Conditions

• Swell exposure: Picks up north and south swells at different times of year, but the spot is generally more consistent with larger ocean energy
• Wind: Trade winds can affect it, so early mornings are often cleaner
• Tide: Tide can make a big difference because of the shallow volcanic reef
• Hazards: Sharp reef, rocks, strong currents, and changing bathymetry from past lava flows

Setting

Pohoiki is in a striking black-sand and lava landscape, with a wild, natural feel that’s very different from more developed surf areas. The coastline has been reshaped over time by volcanic activity, so the surf environment can change from season to season.
