Kua Bay

Kua Bay (also known as Maniniʻōwali Beach) is a scenic surf spot on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi with clear water, white sand, and a beautiful exposed west-facing shoreline. It’s one of the more accessible and well-known breaks on the Kona coast.

Surf character

• Wave type: Mainly a beach break with shifting peaks, plus occasional conditions that can produce fun, punchy surf.
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers when it’s working well.
• Wave quality: Can be very fun on the right swell, but the sandbars move around, so conditions change often.
• Crowds: Popular due to easy access and beach beauty, so it can get busy, especially on good days.

Conditions

• Swells: Works best with North to Northwest swells, though it can pick up other west-facing energy depending on size and angle.
• Wind: Light offshore or calm morning winds are usually best; onshore trade winds can make it choppy.
• Tides: Tide can affect how the waves break; mid tide is often a good starting point.

Hazards

• Strong currents can develop, especially with larger surf.
• Rips and shorebreak can be powerful.
• Sharp reef/rocks may be present in some areas, so be mindful entering and exiting.
• Respect local surfers and conditions, as this is a well-used break.

Vibe

Kua Bay is known as a beautiful, inviting spot with a more relaxed beach-day feel than many surf destinations, but the surf itself can still be serious when swell lines up. It’s a great place to combine a surf session with swimming, snorkeling, or just enjoying the scenery.
