Alabama Point is a surf spot on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, near Orange Beach, at the eastern end of Perdido Pass. It’s one of the better-known wave spots in the state because it can pick up swell that wraps around the pass and nearby structures.
Spot overview
- Location: Gulf Shores / Orange Beach area, Alabama, USA
- Break type: Mostly a beachbreak with some influence from the pass/jetty area
- Best for: Shortboarders and intermediate surfers when conditions are right
- Wave character: Typically small to moderate Gulf swell, often softer and less consistent than open-ocean surf spots
Conditions
- Best swell direction: Usually works best with southeast to south swell
- Wind: Best on light offshore or calm winds; onshore Gulf breezes can make it messy quickly
- Tide: Can be tide-sensitive, with some sections improving depending on sandbars and water level
- Consistency: Seasonal and event-driven rather than reliable daily surf
Hazards and considerations
- Strong currents can develop near the pass
- Boat traffic and local navigation channels nearby
- Changing sandbars can alter the break from week to week
- After storms or larger swells, conditions can become more powerful and potentially hazardous
Vibe
Alabama Point is a local favorite and often the go-to spot when the Gulf lights up. It’s not a world-class wave, but it can provide fun, rideable surf in a region where good waves are relatively rare.
