RCA is a North Bay surf spot around the Marin Headlands / Rodeo Beach area near the San Francisco side of the Golden Gate. It’s a rugged, scenic stretch of coast exposed to the open Pacific swell, so it can light up when there’s enough west or northwest energy in the water.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mostly a beachbreak/reef-mix depending on the exact takeoff zone and sand movement
• Power: Can be punchy and fast when conditions line up
• Consistency: Very dependent on swell, tide, and wind
• Crowds: Usually lighter than more famous Bay Area breaks, but conditions need to be good to make it worth the paddle

• Swell: West to northwest swell
• Wind: Light offshore or very light wind; strong wind can make it messy quickly
• Tide: Often tide-sensitive; mid tide is a common starting point, though this varies
• Season: Fall and winter generally offer the most reliable surf in Northern California

• Cold water: Bring proper thermal protection; a thick wetsuit is usually necessary
• Strong currents: Rip currents and sweep can be serious
• Rocky/gnarly bottom sections: Depending on the exact break area, there can be shallow or rocky sections
