Fort Point (San Francisco, California — near the Marin side of the Golden Gate) is a legendary, highly exposed point/jetty-style surf spot tucked just inside the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s best known for powerful, cold-water left-hand waves breaking over a rocky reef and the famous bridge-support area nearby.

Surf character

Wave type: Mostly lefts, fast and hollow on the right swell
Bottom: Rocky reef / submerged structure
Power level: Heavy and demanding
Best for: Experienced surfers only

Conditions

Swells: Works on NW to WNW swell with enough size
Wind: Prefers light offshore / calm conditions; strong wind can make it messy quickly
Tide: Tide sensitive; can change shape a lot with tide level
Water: Very cold year-round, so full rubber is usually needed

Hazards

Strong currents and tidal flow from the Golden Gate
Shallow, rocky sections
Heavy wave energy
Boat traffic and changing conditions
Can be extremely unforgiving if you fall in the wrong section

Vibe

A classic big-wave / local hardcore San Francisco spot with a lot of history and respect attached to it
Often more of a special-condition session than a casual everyday break

Best season

Usually fall through spring for consistent NW swell
Summer can still work, but it’s generally less reliable
