Boat House

Boat House is a Santa Barbara surf spot in California, located along the South Coast where exposed beachbreak and reef influences can mix depending on the section and swell direction. It’s generally known as a localized, condition-dependent spot that can produce fun waves when the right northwest swell lines up with favorable winds.

What to expect

• Wave type: Typically a mix of beachbreak and nearby reef/bottom contour effects, so the peaks can shift around.
• Best swells: Usually works best on NW to WNW swell with enough size to wrap into the area.
• Wind: Cleanest with light offshore or calm morning conditions; onshore winds can quickly make it messy.
• Wave quality: Can offer playful, rideable waves rather than long, highly consistent surf. When it’s on, it can be fun for both shortboard and fish/grovel-style boards.
• Crowds: Like many Santa Barbara-area breaks, it can get crowded when conditions are good.

Skill level

• Often best suited to intermediate surfers and above, especially if currents, shifting peaks, or reefy sections are in play.
• Beginners may find it more challenging than a mellow beginner beach because of variable takeoff zones and occasional stronger surf.
