Sloughs is a well-known surf break in San Diego County, California, located on the north side of Point Loma near Sunset Cliffs. It’s a local favorite and can produce very good waves when conditions line up, especially during south swells and periods of decent offshore wind.

Surf characteristics

Type: Reef break
Wave shape: Fast, powerful, and often hollow
Best for: Experienced surfers
Conditions: Can offer long, racey lefts and rights depending on the swell direction
Hazards: Sharp reef, rocks, strong currents, and occasional heavy shorebreak

Best conditions

Swell direction: South to southwest swells tend to light it up best
Wind: Northeast/offshore winds are ideal
Tide: Often works best at mid to low tide, but can get shallow and dangerous when very low
Consistency: Not super consistent, but very fun when it breaks

Crowd / local scene

Sloughs can get crowded when it’s on, and it has a strong local scene. Respect for other surfers and awareness of lineup etiquette are important.

Access / setting

The break is accessed from the cliffs area near Sunset Cliffs. The setting is scenic, with dramatic coastline and views of the Pacific, but the entry can be a little tricky depending on the spot and conditions.
