Camp Pendelton

Camp Pendleton is a large military reservation on the Southern California coast, and its shoreline includes a number of well-known surf breaks. Because it’s a restricted military area, access can be limited or controlled, but the waves themselves are often considered quality North County/San Diego County-style beachbreak and reef setups depending on the exact stretch of coast.

General surf character

• Wave type: Mostly beachbreaks, with some localized points, reefs, and sandbar setups along the base’s coastline.
• Consistency: Can pick up a lot of swell because it’s exposed to the open Pacific.
• Wave quality: Best on a clean swell with favorable wind; can range from playful and rippable to heavy and hollow, especially during larger winter swells.
• Crowds: Typically much lighter than nearby public Orange County and San Diego spots due to access restrictions.
• Atmosphere: Remote, military-adjacent, and less developed than nearby surf towns.

Conditions and seasons

• Winter: Often the best time for larger, more powerful surf from North Pacific storms. Can get sizable and more demanding.
• Summer: Smaller, softer south swells are common, with more approachable conditions on good sandbars.
• Wind: Morning offshore winds can make it cleaner; afternoon onshores are common along this coast.

Best for

• Intermediate to advanced surfers when the surf is bigger or more powerful.
• Beginners if conditions are small and soft, but access and exact break conditions matter a lot.
