North jetty

North Jetty (Humboldt, California) is a classic Northern California surf spot located at the mouth of Humboldt Bay near Eureka, on the end of the North Jetty. It’s known for powerful, often heavy waves that are heavily influenced by sand movement, tides, and swell direction.

What it’s like

• Wave quality: Can be very good when conditions line up, with fast, hollow, wedging rights and lefts depending on the sandbars.
• Wave type: Primarily a beachbreak/jetty break with shifting peaks rather than a perfectly consistent point-style wave.
• Power: Strong and punchy. It can get thick, fast, and sketchy, especially on bigger swells.
• Consistency: Highly tide- and sand-dependent, so it can change a lot from week to week and season to season.

Conditions

• Best swell: Usually does well with NW to WNW swells, which are common along the Northern California coast.
• Wind: Prefers light offshore or calm conditions; onshore wind can quickly make it messy.
• Tide: Often more surfable around a mid tide, but the ideal tide can vary depending on sand buildup.
• Water: Cold year-round, so a thick wetsuit is usually necessary.

• Heavy closeouts and shallow sections
• Changing sandbars
• Cold water and rough ocean conditions
• Crowds can be lighter than at more accessible California spots, but the spot can still be serious
