Pelican Beach

Pelican Beach is a surf spot on the far North Coast of California, in Del Norte County, near Smith River off Kellog Road. It’s part of a rugged stretch of coastline known for a wild, scenic setting and powerful Pacific swell.

• Wave quality: Can be very good when conditions line up, but it’s generally a more rugged, less forgiving spot
• Best swell: Works best with NW to W swells
• Best wind: Offshore easterly or light variable winds

What to expect

• Cold water year-round
• Strong currents and rips
• Powerful surf on bigger swell days
• Can be crowded less than more famous California breaks, but local knowledge helps a lot
• Conditions can change quickly due to shifting sandbars and storm activity

Access and setting

• Located near the small community of Smith River, close to the Oregon border
• Access may involve walking from roadside or nearby coastal access points
• The beach and surrounding area are scenic, with cliffs, dunes, and open ocean views

Things to know

• Bring a wetsuit: usually a 4/3 mm or thicker, depending on season
• Watch for logs, rocks, and changing sandbars
• Because it’s exposed and often remote, it’s best surfed with caution and local awareness
