Strathy bay

Strathy Bay is a remote beach and surf spot on the north coast of Scotland, in Sutherland. It’s a wide, sandy bay facing the North Atlantic, with exposed conditions that pick up swell easily and often deliver powerful, raw waves.

What it’s like

Strathy Bay can produce punchy, hollow peaks on the right swell and tide, but because it’s so exposed, conditions can change quickly. The break tends to be better when a clean swell lines up with a favorable tide and light offshore wind. In bigger surf, it can become heavy and challenging, with strong currents and a lot of water movement.

Setting

The spot is in a dramatic, open coastal landscape with cliffs, dunes, and long empty beach. It feels wild and isolated, which is a big part of its appeal.

Things to keep in mind

• Cold water: A thick winter wetsuit, boots, gloves, and hood are usually needed much of the year
• Access: Remote location means limited facilities
