Nigg Bay

Nigg Bay is a surf spot on the east coast of Scotland, near Aberdeen in the North Sea. It’s a relatively exposed bay that can pick up East or North-East swell, but it’s not a consistent, everyday surf location compared with the west coast. Conditions tend to be highly tide- and wind-dependent, and the spot is usually best when offshore or light westerly winds clean up the face.

What to expect: - Wave type: Mostly beach/bay-style surf with a variable, often short-period North Sea swell - Swell direction: Best with E/NE swell - Wind: Often wants W/NW winds offshore; onshore easterlies can quickly make it messy - Tide: Tide can make a big difference; the best stage depends on sand/shore setup and current conditions - Crowds: Usually quieter than more famous UK surf areas - Consistency: Inconsistent; better after a good Atlantic-to-North-Sea transfer or local wind setup

Conditions and character: - Can be bumpy and powerful when the wind is up - Wave quality is often moderate rather than classic, but it can produce fun sessions when aligned - Water is cold year-round, so a thick wetsuit, boots, gloves, and hood are often needed even in milder months - Best for surfers who are comfortable reading variable conditions and checking it in person before paddling out

Local note: - As with many east coast spots in Scotland, the exact sandbanks and peak shape can change a lot with storms and seasons, so the surf can look very different from one week to the next.
