Whitsand Bay

Whitsand Bay is a long, scenic stretch of coastline on the south coast of Devon, often exposed to solid Atlantic swell and known for its dramatic cliffs, wide sandy beaches, and powerful surf. It’s one of those spots that can light up when conditions line up, especially with a good southwest swell and offshore winds.

Surf character

• Beachbreak with shifting sandbanks: The waves can be punchy and hollow in the right conditions, but the sandbanks move around a lot, so the best peaks change frequently.
• Best on a decent swell: It generally needs some size to really work well, though smaller days can be fun when the banks are set up.
• Can be powerful: When the surf is up, it can be strong and sometimes fast, making it better suited to confident surfers.

Wind and swell

• Ideal swell direction: Usually responds well to southwest to west swell.
• Best winds: Light offshore or cross-offshore winds, often from the north or northeast depending on the exact break.
• Exposure: It’s fairly open to Atlantic weather, so conditions can change quickly and it can become rough if the wind picks up.

Crowd and access

• Less crowded than famous UK surf spots: It can still attract local surfers and visitors when conditions are good, but it’s often quieter than better-known beaches.
• Access can be tricky: Steep paths and cliffside access mean you should be prepared for a bit of a walk depending on where you enter.

• Tides matter: Like many beachbreaks, the quality can vary a lot with tide height and the particular bank setup.
