Watergate Bay is a long, open sandy beach on Cornwall’s north coast, exposed to the full Atlantic swell. It’s one of the more consistent surf spots in the area and works best with W to NW swell and light offshore winds from the south or southeast.

What it’s like

• Beach break with shifting peaks
• Powerful and punchy at size, but usually manageable due to the wide bay
• Can offer softer waves for beginners on smaller days, especially near mid-tide
• When conditions line up, it can produce fun, long, rideable waves

Best conditions

• Swell: W / NW
• Wind: E / SE offshore
• Tide: Works across most tides, but often best around mid tide
• Wave size: Small to medium is ideal for most surfers; larger swells bring more power and rip current risk

Hazards / considerations

• Strong rips can form, especially with bigger surf
• Crowded at times, particularly in summer and when conditions are good
• The sandbanks move frequently, so quality can vary from day to day
• Exposed location means it can get big and windy quickly
