Seaton Carew is a long, open beachbreak on the east coast of England, just south of Hartlepool. It’s one of the more exposed surf spots in the North East, so it tends to pick up as much Atlantic swell energy as reaches this side of the UK. Because of its broad sandy shoreline and relatively shallow profile, it can produce fast, punchy waves when conditions line up.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Mainly sandbar beachbreak
• Best for: Beginners to intermediate surfers on smaller, cleaner days; more experienced surfers when it’s bigger and hollower
• Conditions: Works best with a good swell and light winds, ideally offshore or cross-offshore
• Tide: Often more surfable around mid tide, though sandbars can shift and affect the best window

Surf character

Seaton Carew can be a fun, accessible wave with short rides and sections that can get quick and steep. On smaller swells it’s usually mellow and forgiving, but in larger conditions it can become more powerful, messy, and uneven due to the shifting sandbanks. Like many North East UK beachbreaks, consistency depends heavily on the sand movement and wind direction.

• Strong currents and rips can develop, especially on bigger swell
• Shifting sandbars mean the break can change from week to week
• Can get crowded when conditions are good, as it’s a popular local surf spot
• Cold water is the norm, so a wetsuit is essential for much of the year

Best season

Surf can be found year-round, but autumn and winter usually bring the most reliable swell and more powerful waves. Summer tends to be smaller and more beginner-friendly.
