Koh Lanta – Klong Dao, Thailand is a long, gentle beach break on the northwest coast of Koh Lanta, best known for being one of the island’s most accessible and beginner-friendly surf spots.

Spot overview

  • Type: Beach break
  • Wave quality: Usually soft, mellow, and not very powerful
  • Best for: Beginners, longboarders, and surf lessons
  • Consistency: Seasonal and highly dependent on swell and wind

Conditions

Klong Dao tends to work best during the southwest monsoon season (roughly May to October), when there’s more swell in the Andaman Sea. Even then, the waves are often small and easy rather than hollow or challenging.

Because it’s a sandy beach with a gradual slope, the waves usually break gently and are more suitable for learning than performance surfing. On smaller days it can be more of a fun paddle or stand-up paddleboard spot than a true surf session.

Wind and tide

  • Wind: Offshore or lighter winds are best; strong onshore winds can make it messy quickly.
  • Tide: Mid tide is often the most workable, though conditions can shift with sand movement.
  • Swell: Needs some swell to be surfable; otherwise it can be flat or very weak.

Crowd and vibe

Klong Dao is close to the island’s main tourist area, so the beach can be busy, especially in high season. The surf crowd is generally relaxed, with a mix of: - first-time surfers - surf school groups - longboarders - casual beachgoers

Hazards / considerations

  • Small waves but weak currents can still be present
  • Crowds during peak tourist periods
  • Changing sandbars can alter the break quickly
  • Limited surf quality compared with Thailand’s better-known surf destinations

Best overall

Klong Dao is a good place to learn or cruise on a longboard, but not usually a destination for advanced surfers looking for powerful or highly consistent waves.
