Karon Beach

Karon Beach, on Phuket’s west coast in Thailand, is a long, open stretch of sand with a relaxed, tropical feel and a scenic backdrop of hills and palms. It’s better known as a beach holiday spot than a world-class surf destination, but it can get rideable waves during the southwest monsoon season, usually from May to October.

Surf conditions

• Wave quality: Generally small to moderate, often soft and more suited to beginners or longboarders.
• Best season: Rainy season/monsoon months, when swells are more likely.
• Break type: Mostly beach break, so the sandbars can shift and conditions change frequently.
• Consistency: Unreliable compared with major surf spots, but fun when a swell hits.

Who it suits

• Beginners: Good when the waves are small and manageable.
• Longboarders / learners: Often the best match for the type of waves found here.
• Experienced surfers: May find it mellow, though it can still be enjoyable on the right day.

Beach vibe

Karon is less hectic than nearby Patong and has a more laid-back atmosphere, with plenty of hotels, restaurants, and beachside amenities. The beach is wide and spacious, making it comfortable for swimming, walking, and relaxing between surf sessions.

Things to note

• During the rougher monsoon period, currents and rips can be strong.
• Surf gear rentals and lessons are usually available in the Phuket area.
• Conditions can vary a lot from day to day, so checking local surf reports is a good idea.
