Mullet bay

Mullet Bay, St. Martin is one of the island’s best-known beach and surf spots, located on the Dutch side (Sint Maarten) near the airport area. It’s a beautiful crescent-shaped bay with white sand, clear water, and a reef/reef-break setup that can produce fun waves when the swell lines up.

• Best for: intermediate to advanced surfers, depending on conditions
• Wave type: mostly reef break with occasional sandier sections near shore
• Swell direction: works best with north to northwesterly swells
• Wind: cleaner with light offshore or cross-offshore winds; can get messy with trade winds
• Wave quality: can be hollow and punchy on the right swell, but is often more of a fun, inconsistent tropical reef break than a highly reliable daily surf spot

• The reef can be shallow, especially on smaller tides, so awareness is important.
• Entry and exit can be tricky when surf is up.
• Local currents and rocks/reef patches mean it’s better suited to surfers comfortable in reef environments.
• Crowd levels can vary, especially when the surf is good.

Mullet Bay is famous not just for surfing but for its postcard scenery—turquoise water, palm-lined beach, and a relaxed Caribbean vibe. It’s a great spot for combining a surf session with beach time.

• Winter months tend to bring the most consistent north swells
• Hurricane season can also produce swells, though conditions are less predictable
