Airport Left, St Barthélemy
Airport Left is a well-known reef break on the northwest side of St. Barthélemy, right by Gustaf III Airport. It’s one of the island’s more accessible and recognizable waves, with the takeoff happening close to the runway, which gives the spot its name and unique atmosphere.
Wave type
- Left-hand reef break
- Breaks over a shallow reef
- Can offer fast, punchy walls with sections for turns and the occasional barrel when conditions line up
Best conditions
- Swell: Works best with solid north to northwest swell
- Wind: Light offshore to side-offshore winds are ideal
- Tide: Usually more consistent at mid to higher tides, since the reef is shallow
- Size: Often best from chest-high to overhead, depending on your comfort and the reef setup
Character
- More of a performance wave than a mellow cruiser
- Can be powerful and shallow, so it’s better suited to confident surfers
- The wave can be finicky, with the quality depending heavily on swell direction and tide
Hazards
- Sharp reef
- Very shallow sections
- Local boat traffic and beachgoers
- The takeoff zone is close to the airport area, so awareness of surroundings is useful
Vibe
- Scenic and memorable, with turquoise water, reef lines, and the unusual backdrop of planes landing overhead
- Usually less crowded than famous mainland spots, but it can draw attention when conditions are good
