Plantations

Plantations is a well-known surf break on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, near the Ahangama / Midigama area. It’s a reef break that’s popular with more experienced surfers because it can deliver fast, powerful, hollow waves when conditions line up.

What it’s like

• Wave type: Reef break
• Style: Fast right-hand wave, often with a good barrel section
• Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers
• Crowd: Can get crowded, especially when conditions are good
• Bottom: Coral reef, so reef booties can be useful for some surfers

Conditions

• Works best with swell from the south or southwest
• Ideal with light offshore winds
• Can handle a range of tide levels, but mid tide is often favorable
• Best during Sri Lanka’s main surf season on the southwest coast, roughly November to April

Vibe and setting

Plantations sits in a beautiful tropical stretch of coastline, surrounded by palm trees, guesthouses, and a relaxed surf-town atmosphere. It’s one of several reef breaks in the area, so it’s often part of a surf trip around nearby spots like Lazy Left, Ram’s, Coconuts, and Kabalana.

• The reef can be shallow, so timing and positioning matter
• It’s a high-quality wave, but not usually the best choice for beginners
