Koggala Lefts is a well-known reef/point-style left-hand wave on Sri Lanka’s south coast, near the town of Koggala just inland from Galle. It’s one of the area’s better lefts, offering long, reasonably organized rides when the swell and tide line up.
What it’s like
- Wave type: Fast, peeling left-hander
- Bottom: Reef/rocky sections, so it can be sharp and shallow
- Quality: Can be very fun and clean on the right swell; one of the more reliable lefts in the south
- Ride length: Can connect into a fairly long wall, especially on smaller to medium swells
Best conditions
- Swell: Works best on south and southwest swells
- Wind: Typically likes light offshore winds from the northeast/east
- Tide: Often best around mid tide; too low can make it sectiony and shallow
Skill level
- Generally better for intermediate to advanced surfers
- Can be challenging for beginners because of:
- the reef
- occasional speed and power
- crowd factor when it’s on
Crowd and vibe
- Usually less crowded than the most famous breaks nearby, but it can still attract locals and traveling surfers when conditions are good
- The vibe is generally relaxed, but local etiquette matters
Access and surroundings
- Located in a scenic coastal area with lagoon/backwater scenery nearby
- Easy to combine with other south coast surf spots, restaurants, and guesthouses around Koggala, Habaraduwa, and Galle
