Hikkaduwa is one of Sri Lanka’s best-known surf spots, located on the southwest coast near Galle. It’s a lively beach town with a long-established surf scene, warm tropical water, and a mix of reef and beach breaks that suit different skill levels depending on conditions.

What it’s like

• Vibe: Busy, energetic, and tourist-friendly, with plenty of surf shops, cafes, and guesthouses.
• Wave type: Mainly reef breaks and some beachy sections depending on the area and season.
• Best for: Beginners to intermediate surfers, though certain reef peaks can work well for more experienced riders when the swell is right.
• Water conditions: Warm water year-round, so you usually only need boardshorts or a bikini/rash guard.

• Main surf season: November to April
  This is when the southwest coast tends to get the most consistent and clean swell.
• Off-season: May to October often brings rougher conditions and stronger monsoon winds, making it less reliable.

What to expect

• Crowds: Can get crowded, especially during peak season and near the most accessible breaks.
• Wave quality: Can be fun and playful, though reef and local conditions mean it’s not always the most forgiving spot.
• Hazards: Shallow reef, rocks, currents, and occasional strong takeoff zones. Reef booties can be useful for protection.
