Bakio

Bakio is one of the classic surf spots in the Basque Country, on Spain’s north coast near Bilbao. It’s a long, open sandy beach exposed to the Atlantic, which means it picks up plenty of swell and can handle a wide range of conditions.

What it’s like

• Type of break: Mainly a beach break
• Wave quality: Can be very good when conditions line up, with fast, punchy peaks
• Best for: Beginners to intermediate surfers on smaller days, and more experienced surfers when the swell gets bigger and cleaner
• Wave direction/swell: Works best with NW to W swells, common in the Bay of Biscay
• Wind: Ideally light offshore or calm; strong onshores can make it messy quickly
• Tide: Tide can have a big effect, with different banks working better at different stages of the tide

Conditions and character

Bakio is known for being powerful and changeable. Because it’s an open beach, the sandbanks shift often, so the peak location can move from session to session. On smaller days it can be a fun, manageable wave. When bigger swell hits, it can get heavy, hollow, and challenging.

Atmosphere

It’s a popular local surf beach, especially in good summer and autumn conditions, so it can get crowded when the waves are pumping. The setting is beautiful too, with green hills and the dramatic Basque coastline around it.

• Watch for strong currents and rips, especially on larger days
• Can be less forgiving when the surf size picks up
• Best surf seasons are often autumn through spring, when Atlantic swell is more consistent, though summer can still produce fun waves
