Portman

Portman is a small bay on the southeast coast of Spain, near La Unión in the Murcia region, along the Mediterranean. As a surf spot, it’s generally more of a small-wave Mediterranean beach-break/funboard spot than a powerful, consistent surf destination.

Spot description

• Wave type: Mostly beach break, with occasional short peaks depending on swell direction and sand movement.
• Best conditions: Works best with north or east swell when there’s enough size to wrap into the bay, plus light offshore winds or very light wind.
• Wave quality: Usually soft to moderate power, often better for beginners, longboards, and intermediate surfers than for heavy-performance surfing.
• Swell reliability: Like much of the Mediterranean, it’s not very consistent. Good days are dependent on storm systems in the Med, and the spot can be flat for long stretches.
• Crowds: Typically low to moderate, though local conditions and swell events can increase numbers.

Beach and setup

• The bay is fairly sheltered, so it can be cleaner than more exposed stretches when the wind is up.
• The seabed is generally sandy, which makes it safer and easier to manage than rocky reef spots.
• Because Portman is a former mining area, the surrounding landscape is quite distinctive and industrial-looking compared with typical postcard surf beaches.
