Port de mataró

Port de Mataró is a harbor area on the Catalan coast, north of Barcelona, on the Mediterranean Sea. As a surf spot, it’s generally not a classic wave destination because the Mediterranean is a small sea with limited swell consistency. When it does work, conditions are usually very dependent on storms, wind direction, and local bathymetry.

What to expect

• Wave quality: Usually weak to moderate, often choppy rather than clean
• Swell: Mainly short-period wind swell; occasional storm-generated waves
• Best conditions: Specific storm events, offshore or light winds
• Water temperature: Mild to warm most of the year; wetsuit often light in winter, rashguard or springsuit in summer
• Crowds: Typically low compared with major Atlantic surf spots
• Hazards: Harbor structures, changing currents, boat traffic, and occasionally messy shorebreak

Spot character

Port areas like Mataró can sometimes create surfable waves near breakwaters or harbor walls, but these are often localized, punchy, and inconsistent. The ride quality may be more suitable for shortboard practice, bodyboarding, or just having fun on small surf rather than long, reliable rides.

Best use

• Good for checking after strong weather systems
• More of a “when it’s on” spot than a dependable daily surf break
• Better for surfers who are local and flexible with conditions
