Ibiza – Cala Nova (Spain, Mediterranean) is one of the more well-known surfable beaches on the island, though it’s not a consistent classic surf destination like Atlantic coasts. It works best when Mediterranean swells line up, usually during stormier periods in autumn, winter, and early spring.

Spot description

Cala Nova is an exposed sandy bay on Ibiza’s northeast coast, with a wide beach and enough open fetch to pick up incoming swell better than many nearby coves. The beach break can produce short, fun peaks and occasionally cleaner shoulder-high waves when conditions are right. Because it’s sandy, the shape can change often, and sandbars shift with the season.

Best conditions

Swell: Small to moderate Mediterranean swell
Wind: Offshore or light winds are best; strong onshore wind can make it messy quickly
Tide: Tidal range in the Mediterranean is low, so tide is less important than swell and wind
Wave type: Mostly beach break, sometimes punchy and fast

Level

Good for beginners to intermediate surfers on smaller days
Can become more challenging when swells are bigger and the waves get steeper and more powerful

Hazards and notes

Can get crowded in the rare good-surf windows
Conditions can change fast due to shifting sandbars and changing winds
Check for rocks at the ends of the bay and any local currents when larger swell hits

Vibe

Cala Nova offers a scenic surf session with clear water and a relaxed island atmosphere. It’s more of a “surf when it’s on” spot than a reliable year-round wave machine, but when the Mediterranean delivers, it can be a fun and photogenic place to surf.
