Soesto

Soesto is a well-known surf spot on the Galician coast of northwestern Spain, near Laxe in the province of A Coruña. It’s one of those classic Atlantic beachbreaks where the setting is as striking as the waves.

What it’s like

• Type: Beachbreak over sand
• Exposure: Very open to the Atlantic, so it picks up plenty of swell
• Wave quality: Can be powerful and fairly hollow when conditions line up, but is usually more user-friendly than some of Galicia’s rockier reef spots
• Best on: A range of swell sizes, though it often shines on mid to larger NW swells with a suitable tide and offshore winds

Conditions

• Wind: Best with easterly/offshore winds, which are common enough in the region
• Tide: Can work on different tides depending on sandbanks, but tide and sand movement matter a lot
• Crowds: Popular with locals and visiting surfers, especially when conditions are good
• Hazards: Strong Atlantic currents, shifting sandbars, and occasional heavy shorebreak

Setting

Soesto sits in a scenic bay with a rugged Galician backdrop: green hills, rocky headlands, and a wild ocean feel. The beach itself is beautiful and relatively exposed, giving it that raw, North Atlantic character.

Best for

• Intermediate to advanced surfers on better days
• Beginners only when the surf is small and mellow, as it can get punchy quickly
