Sabon

Sabón is a surf spot on the Atlantic coast of Galicia, in northwestern Spain, near Arteixo and A Coruña. It’s a rugged, exposed beach break with plenty of North Atlantic swell, so it can produce powerful, punchy waves rather than mellow, longboard-style surf.

What it’s like

• Type: Mostly beach break
• Wave quality: Can be very good when sandbanks line up
• Power: Often strong and hollow, especially on bigger swells
• Vibe: Raw, open-ocean feel; less sheltered than many beginner beaches

Conditions

• Best swell: West to northwest swells
• Wind: Offshore or light east/northeast winds are usually best
• Tide: Often tide-sensitive; sandbanks and tide stage can change the shape a lot
• Consistency: Good exposure to Atlantic swell makes it fairly consistent, especially in autumn and winter

Skill level

• Usually better suited to intermediate to advanced surfers
• Can be surfed by beginners on smaller days, but on larger swells it can get heavy and unforgiving

Hazards / things to watch

• Strong currents and rip channels
• Powerful waves and fast closing sections
• Changing sandbanks and shorebreak
• Cold water much of the year, so a wetsuit is typically needed

Setting

The beach has a dramatic Galician coastline feel: wild, wind-swept, and often less crowded than more famous European surf destinations. It’s a good spot if you like uncrowded, nature-heavy sessions and don’t mind variable conditions.
