Razo

Razo is one of Galicia’s best-known surf spots, located on the wild Atlantic coast of northwest Spain, near Carballo in A Coruña province.

Spot character

• Beachbreak: Long sandy beach with multiple peaks
• Wave type: Fun, consistent Atlantic swell magnet
• Best for: All levels, though it can get powerful on bigger swells
• Direction: Works well on west to northwest swells
• Wind: Best with east / southeast offshore winds

Conditions

Razo often offers a variety of waves along the beach, which means you can usually find a peak that suits the day. It can be playful and forgiving on smaller swell, but during larger Atlantic pulses it can become punchy and hollow, with strong currents and heavier closeouts.

Best time to surf

• Autumn and winter are typically the most consistent
• Summer can be smaller and more mellow, but still surfable
• Tide sensitivity varies by bank, but it’s generally worth checking on both mid and lower tides

Vibe and environment

Razo has a raw, open-ocean feel, with a wide sandy shoreline and dramatic Galician scenery. It’s popular with local surfers but usually has enough space to spread out because of the length of the beach. Nearby, you’ll find other notable surf areas along the Costa da Morte.

Keep in mind

• Can have strong rips and shifting sandbanks
• Bigger days can be heavy and powerful
• Water is cold, so a wetsuit is needed much of the year
