A Lanzada

A Lanzada is one of the best-known surf spots in Galicia, northwest Spain, on the Atlantic coast near Sanxenxo / O Grove. It’s a long, exposed beach break with a very open-ocean feel, which means it picks up plenty of swell and can offer powerful, punchy waves.

Wave character

• Beach break with sandbars that change often
• Usually fast and hollow on a good swell
• Can handle a lot of wave energy, so it often works when smaller beaches are flat
• Best on a clean Atlantic swell with light offshore wind

Best conditions

• Works best with northwest to west swells
• Offshore winds from the east / northeast tend to clean it up
• Can be surfed at many tide stages, but conditions vary a lot with sand movement
• On the right day it can produce solid, powerful surf

Skill level

• Generally intermediate to advanced, especially when it gets bigger
• In smaller, softer conditions it can be more approachable for progressing surfers
• Strong currents and shifting banks can make it more challenging

Crowd and atmosphere

• It’s a popular spot, especially in season and when conditions are good
• The setting is beautiful, with a wide sandy beach and a very natural coastal landscape
• Because it’s exposed, it can feel wild and less sheltered than many other beaches

Things to know

• Watch for strong currents
• Sandbars can change after storms, so the break may look different from week to week
• The beach can be a good option when you want a reliable swell magnet in the area
