Sonabia

Sonabia is a scenic surf spot on the Cantabrian coast in northern Spain, near the border area between Cantabria and the Basque Country. It sits by a beautiful bay with cliffs, green hills, and a fairly wild, natural setting, making it one of the more picturesque beach breaks in the region.

• Type: Mostly a beach break with shifting sandbars
• Wave quality: Can offer fun, playful waves when conditions line up, but it’s known to be inconsistent and very dependent on swell direction and tide
• Best for: Often better for beginners to intermediate surfers on smaller days, though bigger swells can make it punchy and more powerful

Conditions

• Swell: Works best with a good NW/N swell
• Wind: Offshore winds are usually from the south
• Tide: Often has a preferred tide window depending on sand movement; like many beach breaks in Cantabria, it can change a lot through the season
• Crowds: Can get busy in summer and on good swell days, but it’s generally less crowded than some of the more famous Cantabrian breaks

Sonabia has a relaxed, natural atmosphere with a remote feel. The beach and surrounding area are very attractive, and the spot is popular not only with surfers but also with hikers and beachgoers. Because it’s in a relatively open bay, conditions can change quickly with the weather.

• The sandbanks shift, so the peak location can move
• Strong currents can develop on larger swells
• Best surf is usually found during the colder months, when Atlantic swell is more consistent
