Liencres

Liencres, Cantabria, Spain is one of the best-known surf areas in northern Spain, located just west of Santander on the Cantabrian coast. It’s a beautiful, rugged stretch of coastline with a mix of sandy beaches, dunes, and exposed Atlantic swell, making it a reliable and scenic surf destination.

Surf character

• Exposure: Open to North Atlantic swell, so it picks up waves regularly, especially in autumn, winter, and spring.
• Wave type: Mostly beach breaks, with shifting sandbanks that can produce fun, punchy waves.
• Best for: Beginners to advanced surfers, depending on the beach and conditions. Some peaks are gentle and forgiving, while others can get fast and powerful.
• Wave quality: Can be very good when the sandbanks line up, but like most beach breaks, it changes often.

Main beaches / areas

The Liencres surf zone includes several beaches, commonly centered around: - Playa de Valdearenas - Playa de Canallave

These are part of the Dunas de Liencres Natural Park, a protected area known for its large dunes and dramatic coastal scenery.

Conditions

• Best swell direction: Usually from the NW to W/NW
• Best wind: E/SE offshore or light variable winds
• Tides: Many peaks work best around mid tide, but this depends on the beach and sand movement
• Crowds: Can get busy when conditions are good, especially with local surfers and visitors from Santander

What to expect

• Cold water for much of the year, so a wetsuit is usually necessary
• Strong currents can develop when the swell is up
• A very scenic setting with cliffs, dunes, and a wild Atlantic feel
