Playa San Lorenzo

Playa San Lorenzo is one of the best-known surf spots in Gijón, Asturias, northern Spain. It’s a long urban beach on the Bay of Biscay, exposed to Atlantic swells and popular with both local surfers and visitors.

Surf character

• Beach break with shifting sandbars
• Can offer fun, punchy peaks across the bay
• Best on mid to larger Atlantic swell with a suitable NW–N direction
• Works best in light winds, especially when conditions are clean
• Can get crowded, especially when the surf is good

• Often more suitable for intermediate surfers, though beginners may find smaller days manageable

Conditions and hazards

• Strong currents and rips can develop, especially on bigger surf
• Beach can have heavy shorebreak at times
• Because it’s an urban beach, it’s easy to access but can be busy with swimmers in summer
• Water is generally cool to cold outside peak summer, so a wetsuit is usually needed

• Atlantic swell is most consistent in autumn, winter, and early spring
• Summer can still have rideable surf, but it’s often smaller and softer
